First love rekindled

I’ve been watching podcasts with Patrick Collison, the founder and CEO of Stripe, a $30 billion unicorn:

A fascinating person, Patrick has rekindled my love of reading. He has books strewn about his house in every room and is very selective about what he reads and how he reads it. He reads 2 books a week and finishes a third of the books he starts. He describes his process for deciding whether a book is worth reading: he opens a random page in the middle and reads a paragraph. Then waits for a few days and reads only if that’s the point he wants to get to.

“At every moment, you should be reading the best book for you” - Patrick Collison

I’m finding myself re-reading books I haven’t read in decades. Started with Erich Segal’s Love Story. A short read, it’s hard-hitting and emotional. I was bawling by the end. A masterpiece. It’s amazing how much drama and emotion he’s able to pack into just a few words.

Then, next read Man, Woman and Child, famous for being the inspiration for Masoom. Loved it. Same pace and impact. The guy is a genius.

Unfortunately, this did not extend to The Class and Prizes, both of which I found dull, contrived and long.

2 shelves of books are calling out my name and are about to get the Patrick Collison treatment.
