A month with the Oura Ring

After a month of sleeping with the Oura Ring every night, it’s been eye-opening and a journey in itself. The three tiny sensors on the ring are a marvel of technology. Size is made to order. Phone connection is seamless. Charging is needed every 4-5 days. This is a beautifully designed and executed device. I love how it feels. The phone app is a joy to delve into and browse the data and insights provided. But the sheer quantity of data does feel overwhelming.

Life changes

No longer do I need to carry the phone to register activity. The 400 daily calories goal is a lot more than Google Fit asks for. Couldn’t find a way to change it, seemingly by design. Does make for a more demanding personal trainer - just what I need. The Calm app integration is cool, done it a few times only, like Headspace.

The most interesting insights are the Sleep data. Most of my numbers are good. Restfulness and Timing are the usual laggards. I find my sleep is usually not as bad as I feel in the morning, and not as good either. Length of sleep and sleep efficiency are the keys to getting a high sleep score. No longer do I berate my family for lying in bed for 9+ hours. With a 80% efficiency, that’s only 7.2 hours of sleep, below the recommended 8 hours.

Wearing the ring at night has not been an issue. Just one night I didn’t feel like wearing it and once my wife put it on. Don’t like wearing it in the shower.

Wants

  1. Display on ring that shows steps on tapping. Syncing to phone to see numbers is inconvenient.

  2. Longer battery life. A weekly charge cadence would much better.

  3. Even smaller size and sensors so that it’s indistinguishable from a regular ring

Conclusion

I’m one happy customer. Highly recommended.
